When to Start Elf on the Shelf, Plus Name Ideas and Easy Set-Ups

How to choose an arrival day, name the elf, and keep it moving all December, with eight quick set-ups for tired evenings.

A quiet living room at dusk where a small elf-shaped soft figure sits among Christmas lights on a bookshelf next to a bowl of popcorn and a tiny paper note.

The Elf on the Shelf has no fixed arrival day. Its mission ends on Christmas Eve and the book's rules set no start date, so you choose the first night. Count back from 24 December: a 1 December arrival gives you 24 nights of new hiding spots, and every day earlier adds one more night to plan.

How the elf works

The maker's site describes the Scout Elf as a hide-and-seek game. Each adoptable elf comes with a keepsake box and a storybook, and the family finds it in a new spot each day.

Wikipedia summarises the book's rules this way. Once named, the elf has its Christmas magic. Each night it flies to the North Pole to report to Santa and comes back to a new spot, which is a long commute for someone who spends the day on a bookshelf. Children shouldn't touch it, because touching would spoil the magic, but they can tell it their wishes.

By the same account, the rules began as one family's habit: Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell wrote the book in 2004 from their own tradition of an elf sent by Santa, and The Lumistella Company published it in 2005. A 2007 Today segment lifted sales, and in 2012 the elf joined a Thanksgiving Day parade.

Four tiles summing up the elf's rules: when its mission ends, how many nights a 1 December start gives, when it moves, and the touching rule.

Picking a name the whole family can say

Name the elf before its first night, since the magic starts with the name. The roundups at Romper and Yahoo Lifestyle, which runs to 100 names, sort their ideas into groups like these:

  • Christmas films lend Buddy, Ralphie, Kevin, Jovie, Rudolph and Cindy Lou Who.
  • Classic holiday names include Holly, Noelle, Kringle, Tinsel and Hope.
  • Seasonal and faith-inspired names run from Jingle Bell, Mistletoe and Dasher to Noel, Joy and Star.
  • Holiday treats give you Cocoa, Gingerbread, Peppermint, Snickerdoodle, Cinnamon and Fudge.

Our own test for choosing between them has three parts: a four-year-old can say it, it fits on a Post-it, and the whole family agrees on it before the arrival night. Snickerdoodle may struggle with the first part. If nothing passes, blend your surname with a Christmas word, or hand down a family nickname.

Getting a real Scout Elf

The Elf on the Shelf Scout Elf

On the maker's site the Scout Elf is adoptable, with its own traits and lore, and the site says buying official products helps families avoid knock-offs and lookalikes.

If you buy from anyone but the maker, compare the box with the maker's own pages and look for sealed packaging and an age label. On marketplaces with third-party sellers, check the seller as well.

Where to look for it today. The buttons search for Scout Elf sets by name and cannot vouch for who is selling, so check the seller before you buy.

Eight set-ups for tired evenings

The elf only moves while the house sleeps. Sparkles to Sprinkles, a family blog, puts the rule plainly: the elf won't speak or move while children are awake. That makes every move an after-bedtime job, so do the thinking in daylight:

  1. Mark the arrival date on the calendar once you have counted back from Christmas Eve, and choose the first spot that afternoon.
  2. Keep the props for the set-ups below in one box or drawer, so nothing has to be hunted down at eleven at night.
  3. Settle tomorrow's spot during the day, when you have a minute to think.
  4. If a set-up calls for a marker, use dry-erase on glass, such as the front of a picture frame, so nothing gets stained.
  5. Write the goodbye note a few days early, so Christmas Eve has one less job on it.

Several of the set-ups below are variations on ideas in the blog's list, the first two most closely. Pick one for each night and save the fiddlier ones for weekends.

  • Spell a short note in Scrabble tiles and stand the elf beside it.
  • Seat the elf on the couch with soft toys, the remote and a bowl of popcorn for movie night.
  • Tuck the elf into a stocking beside a candy cane.
  • Perch the elf on a branch of the tree, half hidden by a bauble.
  • Wrap the elf in a scarf and sit it on the windowsill, watching for snow.
  • Stand the elf at the head of a queue of shoes by the front door.
  • Set the elf in an empty cereal bowl on the breakfast table, spoon at the ready.
  • Prop the elf in the fridge door beside the butter, where it is nearly as cold as home.

Elf days out at US SEA LIFE aquariums

Laughing Place reported on 22 October that the Sea Star Search with The Elf on the Shelf, a collaboration with The Lumistella Company, runs at nine SEA LIFE aquariums from 20 November (7 December at Charlotte-Concord) to 3 January 2027, and described it as included with general admission. Check your aquarium's own page for dates and booking.

If you are in London, Secret London reported on 29 October a free trail of 12 giant Scout Elves at city landmarks, though exact dates had not been released.

Quick answers

How many nights does the elf stay?

From its arrival until Christmas Eve, when its mission ends. A 1 December start means 24 nights of new spots; a 25 November start means 30.

What if I forget to move the elf?

Leave it where it is and prop up a note saying it was kept late at the North Pole. That is our suggestion rather than a rule from the book, but it fits the elf's nightly trip, and the next night carries on as normal.

Do I need the official Scout Elf?

The maker's site steers families to official Scout Elf sets, which come with a keepsake box and storybook, and says they help avoid knock-offs and lookalikes. If you buy from another seller, compare the box with the maker's own pages first.

Can children touch the elf?

Not under the book's rules as Wikipedia summarises them, because touching would spoil the elf's magic. Children can still talk to it and tell it their wishes.
